ink

Vivienne’s art practice is deeply shaped by her connection to the craftspeople behind her materials. She has met each artisan, the paper, brush and ink makers - stepping beyond the shop into ancient workshops where traditions have been passed down for centuries. Where sumi ink has been handcrafted for over 400 years, she witnessed the meticulous process of soot collection, shaping, and aging—an art form rooted in a history stretching back millennia. Each time Vivienne grinds sumi ink in her studio, she think about this journey—the fire, the air, the hands that shaped it, and the quiet patience infused into its making. Working with such materials is a reminder that art is not just about what we create, but how we connect to the past, the earth, and the traditions that endure. In her work, Vivienne paints endangered nature with endangered craft, honouring both the fragility of the natural world and the traditions that bring it to life.
