TERRA
ongoing project about spheres — symbols of strength, wholeness and infinity.
They represent the earth, the sun, and the moon — celestial bodies in continuous motion, holding the rhythms of life.
The sphere speaks directly to Vivienne’s work and life — a continuous search for meaningful ways to collaborate with, listen to and respond to the living world. The shape of the earth reminds us that everything is held in relationship: land, air, water.
Through intuitive ink painting and a practice of presence, Terra becomes a quiet invocation of balance, a meditation on how to move gently within the cycles that sustain life. The sphere becomes like a reflecting on connection, care and the infinite conversation between ourselves and the natural world.
Drawing an Ensō is about feeling a quiet unity between hand, brush, and paper. Sometimes the ink runs out before the circle is complete — but part of the practice is staying with it, following through to the end. At first, the circle may break or hesitate, but over time, you learn to move with the brush, adjusting as you go. There are no perfect shapes — each Ensō reflects the state of mind in that moment, and part of its beauty lies in letting go of control and simply being present.
Vivienne has been drawn to the Ensō symbol — that originates in Japanese calligraphy and ink painting — long before she felt it had to be part of the TERRA series. Over time, she returned to this as a meditative practice. Drawing Ensō is a way to enter stillness — a single gesture that embraces imperfection and impermanence, echoing the Japanese Wabi-Sabi philosophy. When painting, Vivienne often enters a state of ‘disappearing’, a feeling that mirrors Zen meditation and the fragility of the natural world that is reflected in the ephemeral quality of her work.
