CINERES

is an ongoing project about fire

Fire is both a destructive and regenerative force in nature, vital to the cycles of growth and decay. Crops, for example, maintain a symbiotic relationship with fire: after harvest, crop residues are burned to clear fields, manage pests, and return key nutrients like potassium and phosphorus to the soil.

Beans for example also serve as natural fire-breaks in wildfire-prone areas, aiding in soil stabilisation after fires.

The Japanese ink used in this piece is traditionally made from soot, which is produced by burning plant materials like pine. This soot, mixed with water and a binding agent, forms the ink, creating a direct connection between fire and the medium.

The ink itself embodies the transformative power of fire, symbolising both creation and destruction.
